Aristolochia californica
California Pipevine
Well, we finally got a Swallowtail to visit our patch and it's been fun following their trials an tribulations.

Lots of flowers this year.

This plant got cut down to the base accidentally a couple years ago and grew back extra vigorous.
The plant next to it has grown free and is much less dense, has fewer flowers and grows less upright
and more like a ground cover. These plants are about 8 years old from 1 gallon can starts.
They've been getting the neighbor's irrigation runoff for two years and they love that.
It is rich organic soil.

Battus philenor
Pipevine Swallowtail

Here's our first visit from the nearest colony which is a few miles away after 8 years of wating.

Dripping wet flowers.

The experimental transplanted caterpillars (apparent failure).
